Purification Methods
The Buffalo Bayou water has become very polluted as the years have passed, many Houstonians have loudly vocalized their unhappiness with the unsanitary and filthy conditions of the heavy polluted Buffalo Bayou. Some reasons for the pollution in the bayou is the trash from Houston streets that usually gets washed up by rain ending up in the bayou. This is known as stormwater runoff which is rain fall that runs on the ground or impervious surfaces like building, roads, or parking lots and drains into our waterways [6]. Houston experienced this effect during Hurricane Harvey where approximately 9 trillion gallons of water were dumped by the storm in the Houston area [1]. Many of the Houston areas were affected with the Buffalo Bayou being one of them. Hurricane Harvey brought many debris, thrash, and pollution to the bayou that took several months to clean up. The Buffalo Bayou Partnership has what is called a skimmer boat program that its main function is to suck trash from the Buffalo Bayou. BBP has designed a custom-built Bio-Vac-an industrial strength vessel that sucks floatable trash from the Buffalo Bayou [5]. The only problem with the skimmer boat is that it only picks up floatable trash and does nothing when it comes to the pollution of the bayou. A solution that can improve the polluted water of the Buffalo Bayou can be by adding a constructed wetland system and also using phytoremediation plants in the area of interest which is from Waugh Allen Pkwy to Houston Downtown.
